Does lipgloss expire?

Nothing lasts forever! It is important to note that lipglosses also have a shelf life.

Even though they are filled with natural preservatives and antioxidants like essential oils and vitamins to help prevent germs, lip glosses do have a shelf life of 10-12 months and they begin grow and house bacteria after this period.

Although, it can be difficult to tell if your gloss is expired as the shine might not be affected.

However, here are a couple of tips that’ll help you identify an expired lipgloss

  • The smell: Regardless of its fragrance or flavoring oil, expired lipgloss evokes a different or even foul smell. For chemically produced lipgloss which isn’t great for your lips, there is no actual foul smell, but when it begins to emit plastic or waxlike smell(like an old crayon) that’s when you know it’s time for a change. This is not difficult to notice if you are an observant person.
  • Change in consistency: The consistency of a lipgloss slowly begins to change once it is expired. It is no longer as smooth as it used to be, as it begins to have some lumps.
  • Visible moisture or molds: The lumps mentioned in the previous point now grow into molds and the products starts to separate.

Once you begin to notice these changes or your gloss has exceeded its 12months timeline, please do away with it as the use of expired lipgloss can cause allergic reactions like dryness and itching on and around your lips

I know as a lipgloss lover you probably don’t need this because you finish lipgloss in a couple of months. But just in case you are curious or you need an explanation to give when you are crossed with the question “why do you run out of lipgloss do fast?” here’s you answer in bold. Lip glosses expire!
